Effect of Lead Paint on Health: A Public Concern

Studies were conducted on the effects of lead paint on health. Lead pigment in old paints is dangerous because it has been identified to cause abnormalities to unborn babies, children, and even adults. The lead causes damage to the nervous system, a decrease in IQ, learning disabilities, stunted growth, infertility, mental retardation and even death.

Previously, lead pigment was added to paint to speed-up the drying of the paint, retain its fresh appearance, improve its durability, as well as be more moisture-resistant. Today, however, adding lead to paint has been banned because of the dangers of lead paint on health or commonly known as lead poisoning.

Studies have found out that lead poisoning in children was from lead dusts that were dislodged from old and deteriorating paint, or while remodeling and repainting the house. Children went as far as the ingestion of the dangerous heavy metal leading to sickness and worst; death.

The government banned lead for residential use and even implemented a required disclosure of house owners to their buyers or renters that lead-based paint has been used in their house. Some of the US states even went as far as filing a suit against companies that sold lead-based paints and requiring them to clean-up the lead that contaminated old houses.

In other states like Illinois, there is the Get the Lead Out program; which hopes to make the state lead-free. Just recently, a US$ 3 million dollars grant was awarded to the program by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development which will be used to remove the lead paint.

In other similar cases, thousands of toys made from China were recalled and banned after posting high levels of lead during testing. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission have acknowledged the ill effects of lead paint on health as it directed the recall of a number of toy products from China such as Barbie dolls, toy gardening tools, and railroad toys with a high lead content.
